Atlantis

Movie details :: Images :: Discuss :: Reviews

Atlantis is a film containing underwater images of the animals in the sea.  Atlantis is a nonverbal film and the cinematography is outstanding.

Directed by Luc Besson, who is better known for his Hollywood movies, Atlantis expands the nonverbal genre by adding another animal related film, but one that is different is style to Microcosmos or Winged Migration.  Atlantis, helped by its subject, is very smooth in style.

The film has distinct chapters, each one with a different theme, and a brief introduction.  Despite this the film flows fell, helped by the consistent colors and theme.  Although there is limited scope for a nonverbal underwater film, Atlantis moves well and fans of the nonverbal film genre will enjoy the film.

Luc Besson is an avid diver, and grew up in Greece where his parents where divers.  Atlantis is the only documentary Luc Besson has made.  Diving fans will surely love this film.

Scenes

Most people will have seen footage from animal documentaries such as those made by the BBC and National Geographic, but Atlantis is different.  It is a film, rather than a science lesson.  There are many noteworthy scenes.  Animals mating and feeding are shown in a remarkable manner.  The precise and powerful movements of the Dolphins are wonderful.  The colors remain consistent throughout the film, adding a warming effect.

Soundtrack

Eric Serra's soundtrack is varied, with many aquatic influenced musical types, such as those found in the Mediterranean.  The change of mood in the movie is set my the sweeping sounds.

Its place in the nonverbal genre

Atlantis is the only film in the genre set entirely underwater, making it unique.  The style is comparable with Koyaanisqatsi in places, and shares many elements with the other animal films Microcosmos, Winged Migration and Genesis.  Atlantis broadens the genre, creating its own place.
